Frequently Asked Questions Print

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about our Financial Transaction Network solutions.

If you cannot find what you are looking for you may like to ask a new question.

How much money will my company save?

The extent your costs can be reduced depends on how much you currently pay for each connection and this varies greatly between countries. We can help you calculate your savings if you provide some information on your current network costs. For example in France the cost per EFTPOS transaction over the phone network is very expensive whereas in New Zealand the cost is low and is free for the merchant.

Areas you can save money include: transport cost per transaction, monthly rental, terminal deployment, helpline support, unnecessary equipment upgrades, and network maintenance. You can also profit from higher customer satisfaction, greater transaction throughput, and growth through extension of your network.

Are Vistas just GPRS modems?

No Vistas are not modems but our wireless range of Vista Adaptors do have a tightly controlled GPRS modem built-in. Vistas provide managed connections for the terminals providing end-to-end benefits such as security, visibility and enhanced performance.

How can I rely on wireless connections when I cannot rely on my mobile phone coverage?

We carried out rigorous testing to find the best GPRS modules and designed the Vista to tightly control the connection to guarantee transaction delivery. Also unlike your cellular phone, our wireless Vistas do not have aerial constraints and are generally fixed in a single location. Most locations can obtain a signal from multiple cell sites but if all sites stop responding our unique dual network option provides carrier redundancy by connecting to a secondary network provider.

What if there is not a strong enough signal at a location?

High gain external aerials can be used if necessary when the signal is obstructed or the coverage is poor. Normally you will not have to use an alternative method to connect.

Is IP the Internet and is IP secure?

Internet Protocol (IP) is not only the Internet, normally you connect to a private wide area network provided by your Telecommunications Provider specifically for your financial transactions. Even if this wasn’t the case, our end-to-end connections do provide security with 3DES encryption and dual authentication over any carrier networks, including the Internet.

Is wireless secure enough for financial transactions?

We provide the highest level of security that protects data over any carrier medium including cellular networks. Unlike simple GPRS modems, we use 3DES encryption, which is well regarded in the financial industry, and add dual authentication to prevent unauthorised access. This means that even if someone could intercept the signal they cannot access the valuable data.

With a wireless connection installed inside an ATM, there is no external communications cable outside the ATM. Even without encryption this can be more secure than dial connections where data interception has been as simple as recording transmissions with an inline MP3 player to retrieve unprotected card numbers. Interception of wireless transmissions is very complex and a fruitless exercise with 3DES encryption unbreakable*.

*Experts rate 3DES as realistically unbreakable due to the thousands of years and massive computing power needed for the required brute force attack.
