Unlike the trusted Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), Internet Protocol (IP) networks use an open architecture that financial institutions are rightfully hesitant to use. On a traditional PSTN network, a transaction travels along a single path from the terminal to the host. In comparison, an IP network sends transaction data as multiple packets along many routes potentially compromising both security and reliability.
